Guys – where has this year gone? I’m not even joking. One minute I’m turning 26 (that’s in June by the way), I blink and it’s suddenly December 21st!
My year has been pretty eventful but without dwelling on the negatives, there has been so much to celebrate and appreciate and I’m looking forward to what 2016 will bring.
When I was on my travels back in 2011, I was in Australia and typical me, was suffering from a bad bout of homesickness. Skyping my Mum, Nan and Grandad was just not the same as being there with them on Christmas Day. I shouldn’t really complain about the 30-odd degree heat that we were treated to down in Brisbane but it just didn’t feel like Christmas in those surroundings – no offence to the lovely company I had!
Anyway, the big day is nearly here for 2015 and whilst I have finally finished all our wrapping and Card writing, I’ve been thinking about all the things that remind me of this time of year.
So here they are, my Top 10 loves of Christmas:
1. Yankee Candles 🕯
Who else loves Yankee? I’ll use any excuse to buy a new one? I’m currently burning Red Velvet Cake and also the Apple Crumble one from their Home range. Perfect to burn when your Pressie wrapping with a Glass of Vino 🙂
2. Strawberry Trifle 😋
More specifically, Marks and Spencer’s. I know what most of you are thinking! *cough*Snob*cough*. Trifle has been a Christmas staple in my World for as long as I can remember and they take the Trophy for Best in Class!
3. Booze 🍾🍷🍺
I for one LOVE Prosecco – Tesco, Costco, Marks and Sparks, I’m not fussy! It’s a quick win for anyone buying for me this year *hint hint*
And while we are on the topic of Alcohol, Kopparberg do a nice Spiced Apple flavour Cider that you can drink chilled…or for a Festive treat – warmed up!
Finally, Baileys with some Milk always goes down a treat, or on the Rocks!
4. Festive Films 🎬
Personally I’m a Grinch kinda Girl but Elf and the Home Alone films are big wins in our Family. The exception being Home Alone 3, I mean how dare they replace Macaulay?!
Then you have the golden oldies that are not quite festive but still get dusted off each year and are given a run on the TV…Oliver, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Shrek, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and who can forget Mary Poppins!
5. Winter Wonderland
Those in reaching distance of London would have heard of or likely been to this place located in Hyde Park.
• Overpriced? Yes.
• Packed out to the rafters? Yes.
• Should you book the Circus/Ice Skating etc. early? Yes.
• A good craic for a booze up and sing-a-long in the Bavarian Village? Abso-friggin-lutely!
6. The Christmas Eve Night Out 🎤
So when work’s finally done and dusted for four days, or for those lucky buggers that don’t go back to work until January, what better way to celebrate your escape than to hit somewhere local for a drink (or five).
For me and the Girls, Staines is our usual Christmas Eve haunt (insert Ali G reference/comment/quote/impression here) as it’s easy and cheap for us to get home from…or hitch a lift from if your Boyf/Sober Mate/Mum are feeling generous!
We always find that we usually bump into a load of blasts from the past… ex-Schoolmates/College mates, ex-Colleagues from your Saturday job at River Island (or is that just me?) or if you are REALLY unlucky, an old conquest. Just make a note of your nearest emergency exit when these unwanted paths do cross!
7. Christmas Songs 🎧
Here’s a few of my favourites to get you in the mood – what are yours?
Fairytale of New York – The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl
Merry Christmas Everyone – Shakin Stevens
Sleigh Ride – The Ronettes
Those classics aside, I am still having flashbacks of one year when us Girls were 17/18 ish. We ALL had the intro to Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas’ as our ringtone… Annnnnnnd CRINGE!
8. Strawberry Quality Street 🍬
Hands down – the best pick out of the whole (ever-shrinking) box! I’m not normally a fan of Dark Chocolate but oh my god, I could eat a Ton of the yummy strawberry filling!
To back me up on that bold statement, the legends at Quality Street offer a box of just the Strawberry ones! They also do a Box of just the Purple ones as well.
9. Online Shopping 💸🛍
I don’t know about you, but I’m really lazy and can think of nothing worse nowadays than spending weekend upon Weekend traipsing the Bentall Centres and Westfields of this world trying to find the right present.
Once you have extended your Overdraft to pay for the Car Park charges, you then have to contend with the slow walkers in the street, the mile-long Queues just to pay for one item only to later on find that item for a fraction of the cost on trusty Amazon!
Me, well I’m quite happy sitting at Home with a Cup of Tea, writing out a list of people to buy for, brainstorming the things they like or are into, then hitting the Net to find that perfect pressie. Bliss!
10. Christmas Day itself! 🎄🎅🏼
After all that Pressie wrapping, Card writing, Veggie prepping, Carol singing, Christmas partying, my favourite part of Christmas is celebrating the day itself with my Family. It’s been a somewhat turbulent couple of months for us but we are all looking forward to getting together.
We’ll be seeing our Niece Poppy and Nephew Bobby on Christmas Day and hopefully our other Nephew Freddie and Niece Violet on Boxing Day as well and I can’t wait to give them their Stockings we have got filled for them!
My Mum, Sister and I are hosting again this year – Wish us luck!
Have a wonderful Christmas everyone!
